The Royal Mint's Growing Interest in Singapore

The Royal Mint, which is the United Kingdom’s official government mint, is taking a growing interest in Singapore and Southeast Asia’s bullion market and is expanding its presence and product offerings in the gold and silver-hungry region.

With an illustrious history going all the way back to 886 AD, The Royal Mint is one of the world’s oldest mints and is famous for its high quality bullion products including the long-running Gold Sovereign coin, the gold, silver, and platinum Britannia, Queen’s Beast, and Tudor Beast series of coins, as well as a variety of gold, silver, and platinum bullion bars.

The Royal Mint’s increased interest in the ASEAN region comes on the heels of a period of resounding success in Singapore that saw a 537% year-over-year increase in total gold ounces sold and a 187% year-over-year increase in total silver ounces sold from 2021/22 to 2022/23 in the wealthy and sophisticated island nation. The Royal Mint’s handsome gold, silver, and platinum Britannia series of bullion coins are particularly popular in Singapore and Southeast Asia overall.

The Royal Mint intends to increase its brand visibility by joining bullion trade organizations and conducting and participating in conferences, seminars, and other educational events in the region.

Commenting on the mint’s increased focus on Singapore, Nick Bowkett, Head of Bullion Sales at The Royal Mint said “As one of the most stable jurisdictions in the world, with goods and service tax (GST) exemption on investment precious metals, Singapore has become renowned internationally for the storage of precious metals. This signals an exciting chapter for The Royal Mint and not only highlights our expertise in precious metals but also drives greater awaremeness of our precious metals offerings throughout South-East Asia".

Gold, Silver & Platinum Britannia Coins

The Royal Mint’s flagship Britannia series of bullion coins, which are minted in gold, silver, and platinum, are the Royal Mint products that are most popular with BullionStar customers and, not coincidentally, the primary product line that The Royal Mint is looking to expand its offerings of in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Paying homage to “Britannia,” an iconic national symbol of Britain, the Britannia coin series is known for its beautiful and intricate designs. The imagery reflects the spirit and strength of the United Kingdom, making these coins not only valuable for their precious metal content but also for their aesthetic appeal.

The Britannia series is also known for its innovative security features, such as micro-engraved radial lines and a latent image. The use of such advanced techniques underscores The Royal Mint’s commitment to both tradition and modernity.

At the time of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022, the 2023 Britannia coins featuring her effigy had already been designed and were being prepared for distribution. The Royal Mint decided not to melt down the existing coins and quickly focused on redesigning the coins to feature the newly crowned King Charles III.

Gold, Silver & Platinum Queen’s Beast Coin Series

Another Royal Mint coin series that has become tremendously popular among both collectors and investors is the Queen’s Beasts Series, which is available in gold, silver, and platinum.

The Queen’s Beast series features majestic and heraldic designs representing the ten mythical beasts that stood guard at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. Each coin in the series portrays a different beast, symbolizing the rich history and symbolism of the British monarchy. This storytelling element adds a unique allure to the series. The series has garnered a dedicated following among collectors due to its captivating narratives and intricately detailed designs. Each release in the series contributes to a larger, evolving story, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a thematic and visually stunning collection.

The Gold Sovereign Coin

The Royal Mint also offers the enduring Gold Sovereign coin, an emblem of the mint’s dedication to precision and excellence. The Gold Sovereign was first introduced during the reign of Henry VII in 1489. However, it wasn’t until 1817, during the reign of George III, that the modern version of the Gold Sovereign as we know it today was established. The Gold Sovereign became a symbol of stability and reliability in the world of coinage.

Since then, The Royal Mint has continued to produce the Gold Sovereign with the same iconic design featuring the image of the reigning monarch on the obverse and the famous St. George and the Dragon motif on the reverse. Over the years, there have been variations in design and refinements in the coin’s specifications, but The Royal Mint has consistently maintained the Gold Sovereign’s reputation for quality and craftsmanship.

Today, the Gold Sovereign remains a widely recognized and respected gold coin, sought after by both collectors and investors for its historical significance and enduring appeal.

As Singapore’s premier gold and silver bullion dealer, BullionStar wholeheartedly welcomes The Royal Mint’s increased interest and participation in our thriving precious metals market.
