Here is a list of bullion coins produced by the United States Mint that are commonly purchased by investors and collectors.
Bullion coins are precious metal coins that are produced by an official government mint. They are considered legal tender but are typically used for investment purposes rather than day-to-day transactional purposes due to their high value, rarity, and physical softness.
United States Mint bullion coins are congressionally authorized, and are therefore legal tender. But these coins are non-circulating, and are assigned face values that are largely symbolic and are far below their market values. For example, a 1 oz American Gold Eagle bullion coin has a nominal $50 face value, and the 1 oz American Silver Eagle bullion coin has a nominal $1 face value
The US Mint operates three bullion coin “Programs”. The American Eagle Bullion Coin Program consists of four denominations of the American Gold Eagle coin, and the 1 oz denomination of the American Silver Eagle, the American Platinum Eagle and the American Palladium Eagle.
The American Buffalo Bullion Coin Program features just the 1 oz American Gold Buffalo coin. There is also the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin™ Program, which was launched in 2010.
1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin |
The 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin is the flagship bullion coin produced by the United States Mint since it was first released in 1986. The 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin is made from 22 karat “crown gold,” which is a gold alloy comprised of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. 22-karat gold was chosen over 99.99% pure 24-karat gold due to its greater durability and wear resistance.
The obverse of the coin features a rendition of Lady Liberty that was intended to be reminiscent of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design used on the classic $20 gold “Double Eagle” coin that was minted from 1907–1933. Between 1986 and 2021, the reverse of the coin featured an eagle soaring above a nest.
Since 2021, the reverse of the coin has featured a side profile of a bald eagle. The 1 oz American Gold Eagle is minted as a standard bullion coin as well as proof and uncirculated versions that are geared towards coin collectors. A total of 22,831,029 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins were produced by the United States Mint between 1986 and 2021. The face value of a 1 oz American Gold Eagle bullion coin is $50 .

1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin |
The 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coin is half the size and weight of the United States Mint’s flagship 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin and, like the larger version, has been minted since 1986. The 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coin is made from 22-karat crown gold and features a design that is identical to the 1 oz coin.
1/2 oz American Gold Eagles are minted as standard bullion coins as well as proof and uncirculated versions that are aimed at coin collectors. A total of 4,170,323 of 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coins were produced by the United States Mint from 1986 until 2021. A 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle bullion coin has a $25 face value. 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coins typically carry higher premiums over the spot price of gold compared to the 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin.

A total of 5,497,934 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle coins were produced by the United States Mint from 1986 until 2021. A 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle coin has a $10 face value. 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle coins typically carry higher premiums over the price of spot gold compared to the 1 oz and 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coins.

The 1 oz American Gold Buffalo coin is a bullion coin that has been produced by the United States Mint since 2006. It is the only bullion coin within the American Buffalo Bullion Coin Program.
The 1 oz American Gold Buffalo coin is extremely high purity as it’s minted from 99.99% pure 24-karat gold, unlike the American Gold Eagle coin series which are made from 22 karat “crown gold,” ( a gold alloy comprised of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper).
The coin’s design is a rendition of James Earle Fraser's Indian Head nickel (1913 to 1938) design, with the obverse depicting a Native American chief, while the reverse features an American buffalo. The 1 oz American Silver Eagle coin is a bullion coin produced by the United States Mint since 1986. The Silver Eagle coin is minted from 99.9% pure silver. The obverse of the Silver Eagle features the "Walking Liberty" design that was originally used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. Between 1986 and 2021, the reverse of the coin featured a heraldic eagle with a shield, olive branch, and arrows.
Since 2021, the reverse of the coin has featured a bald eagle landing on a branch. 1 oz American Silver Eagles are minted as standard bullion coins as well as proof and uncirculated versions that are geared towards coin collectors. A total of 530,420,354 1 oz American Silver Eagle coins were produced by the United States Mint between 1986 until 2022. A 1 oz American Silver Eagle coin has a $1 face value.

5 oz America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin |
The 5 oz America the Beautiful silver bullion coin was produced by the United States Mint from 2010 to 2021. The coin is minted from 99.9% pure silver and is the largest silver bullion coin ever issued by the United States Mint. These silver bullion coins feature America’s national parks and are identical in design to the America the Beautiful quarters that were also issued between 2010 and 2021. In each of the 11 years between 2010 and 2021, five different designs of America the Beautiful quarters (and the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins) were issued, creating a series of 55 designs. In 2021, one further design was issued, creating a total series of 56 coins. Each of the 56 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins was issued in a bullion mintage and an ‘uncirculated’ mintage. A 5 oz America the Beautiful silver coin has a $.25 face value.

The 1 oz American Platinum Eagle coin is a bullion coin that has been produced by the United States Mint since 1997. Minted from 99.95% fine platinum, each year the coin is given a new design that typically features the bald eagle and other patriotic themes.
1 oz American Platinum Eagle coins are minted as standard bullion coins as well as proof and uncirculated versions that are geared towards coin collectors. Standard 1 oz American Platinum Eagle bullion and uncirculated coins have been minted sporadically throughout the years, while proof coins have been minted consistently each year since 1997.
The ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz American Platinum Eagle coin denominations in standard bullion and proof versions were minted from 1997 to 2008. A total of 826,222 1 oz American Platinum Eagle coins were produced by the United States Mint from 1997 to 2021. A 1 oz American Platinum Eagle coin has a $100 face value.

The 1 oz American Palladium Eagle coin is a bullion coin that has been produced by the United States Mint since 2017. The 1 oz American Palladium Eagle coin is minted from 99.95% fine palladium. The obverse of the coin features the Winged Liberty Head design that was originally used on the Mercury dime from 1916 to 1945, while the reverse of the coin features an eagle with raised wings that is pulling a laurel branch out of a rock.
1 oz American Palladium Eagle coins are minted as standard bullion coins and proof coins. A total of 29,986 1 oz American Palladium Eagle coins were produced by the United States Mint from 2017 to 2022. A 1 oz American Palladium Eagle coin has a face value of $25, with a market value far higher, based on the spot price of palladium plus a market premium and a rarity premium..
