Minted from 99.99% pure gold, the gleaming 1 oz American Gold Buffalo bullion coin is the purest gold coin ever produced by the United States Mint.

Though the 1 oz American Gold Eagle has been America’s flagship gold bullion coin for several decades, the U.S. Mint introduced the American Gold Buffalo as an exciting and purer alternative in 2006.

While the 1 oz American Gold Buffalo is minted from 24-karat gold, American Gold Eagle coins are made from 22 karat “crown gold” — an alloy that consists of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.

The obverse side of the coin features a Native American chief, while the reverse side features an American buffalo. The coin’s design is borrowed from James Earle Fraser's Indian Head nickel (1913 to 1938) design.

American Gold Buffalos are legal tender in the U.S. and have a US$50 face value.
